Southwest Washington is made for touring. You’ll want to begin your tour with Vancouver – just as if you were an early American pioneer exiting the Oregon Trail. In Vancouver, you can begin your journey with a dose of history at the Fort Vancouver National Historic Site.

Baking hardtack at Fort Vancouver

To get here (from the south), take I-5, exit 1-C (Mill Plain Boulevard), drive east, and follow the signs. Fort Vancouver was once the center of the British Hudson Bay Company’s network of fur trading posts. But it also became the site of the region’s first hospital, school, mill, and shipbuilding. Today, the site encompasses the Fort Vancouver National Historic Reserve, where you can go on guided tours. Next to the Fort, Pearson Air Museum is also well-worth a visit.

Once you’re in Vancouver, you really can’t leave until you’ve taken the time to drive east along the Columbia River Gorge Scenic Byway, from Washougal (just east of Vancouver) to Maryhill, unless you really did just come from Oregon and spent time there along Oregon’s Historic Columbia River Highway, which runs parallel to it on the other side of the river. You’ll need to budget at least a day for this trip, however, as it will take you more than two hours of driving time to reach Maryhill, and another two hours to return to the Vancouver area. But what a beautiful and relaxing drive! Once you reach Maryhill, you can visit the Maryhill Museum of Art, or, if you are a wine connosieur, the famous Maryhill Winery.

The stunning terrace at Maryhill Winery

If you arrive in a summer month, you may manage to make it to one of Maryhill Winery’s summer concerts. (The 2011 season will feature Yes & Styx, Gipsy Kings, and Michael McDonald & Boz Scaggs.) Maryhill is also the site of a World War I memorial which was built as an exact replica of Stonehenge.

You may want to plan on camping in Maryhill, at Columbia Hills State Park, which is RV-friendly, so that you can take your time and explore the area, perhaps making short trips across the river, as well. Columbia Hills is well worth your time – you’ll be able to see ancient Native American petroglyphs and walk the Tamani Pesh-wa Trail. There are more than 12 miles of hiking trails here, and you can also go boating, sailboarding, rock climbing, swimming, or even play horseshoes. At night, take some time to observe the night sky – this is a beautiful area in which to see the stars.

Sailboarding on the Columbia River

On the way to or from Maryhill, depending on your schedule, stop in Stevenson at the Columbia Gorge Interpretive Center Museum. This is the place to go if you have an RV full of fidgety kids. In addition to the museum’s extensive indoor historical exhibits, kids can climb into a historic diesel locomotive outside. In addition, you may want to take time to see the Bridge of the Gods, the third oldest bridge on the Columbia River.

Columbia Gorge Interpretive Center

Leaving Vancouver again (or leaving the first time, if you choose to skip the trip to Maryhill), drive north on I-5 and take exit 14 (Pioneer St./Washington 501 W) for Ridgefield, where you can visit the Ridgefield National Wildlife Refuge. Here you will find not only a beautiful flood plain habitat (watch for sandhill cranes!), but also the townsite of Cathlapotle, which was visited by Lewis and Clark in 1806.

Cathlapotle Plankhouse

You can hike through the refuge or take the four-mile car tour. [Don't miss this ZEST post by Sarah Coomber on hiking with children in the refuge.]

Getting back on I-5, head for Silver Lake (get off at exit 49, Castle Rock). If you enjoy fishing or hiking, you may want to spend some time here, and camp at Seaquest State Park. To reach the visitor center, head east on 504, but don’t limit yourself to Sequest’s own visitor center – if you continue east, you’ll reach the Mount St. Helens Forest Learning Center. If you’d like an alternate route to Mount St. Helens, you can exit I-5 at exit 21 near Woodland, but that route won’t take you to the visitor’s center. The center is inside the blast zone from the 1980 Mount St. Helens eruption, and includes an outdoor volcano playground and indoor virtual helicopter tour.

After May 15, when the road opens, you can proceed to the Johnston Ridge Visitor Center and Johnston Ridge Observatory.

The Road to Mount St. Helens

You can hike and climb in the Mount St. Helens area, but you will need to reserve a pass in advance, and you are required to stick to the trail. If you are old enough to remember the eruption, the trail will be amazing enough! If you aren’t old enough to remember the eruption, or would like a refresher, watch some archival footage before you get there. For a map of trails in the area, click here. If you are lucky enough to climb to the top of the crater, bring a dust mask – there is still occasional ashfall, and it isn’t good for your lungs.

From the Mount St. Helens area, you’ll want to head for the coast so you can see the sights that Lewis and Clark saw when they reached the Pacific. Head south again on I-5, but this time take highway 30 west toward the ocean. It will take you an hour or two to reach the Lewis and Clark National Historic Park, near Chinook. Continuing along the coast to Long Beach, Washington, about 200 feet above the surf itself, at Cape Disappointment State Park, you can visit the Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center.

The Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center

View from the Interpretive Center

Take as much time as you can to enjoy this beautiful area, where you can beachcomb, hike, and relax. You can camp at Cape Disappointment overnight.

Continuing north to Ilwaco, you can visit the Willapa National Wildlife Refuge, where you can see fresh and saltwater marshes and tidal estuaries. This is the place to go if you enjoy birdwatching – you can see pelicans, murrelets, bald eagles, great blue herons, and many other waterfowl and marsh birds.

Maybe you will have had enough driving by this point in your trip, but if you feel you just can’t leave Washington State without a trip to Mount Rainier, Washington’s highest peak, you can certainly make it – and it’s a glorious way to end your trip. Leaving the coast, get back onto I-5, exit at 68 (Morton/Yakima), and take US-12 E to WA-123 N. From here on east to Mount Rainier, the roads are closed seasonally, so check the dates when you plan your trip. Check the road status here. If you are taking the time to make the trip to Mount Rainier, plan on camping in the park and give yourself plenty of time to enjoy all that it has to offer.

You won’t want to leave Southwest Washington, so make sure that you give yourself plenty of time to poke around along the way-you’ll discover your own favorite locations and meet some of the friendliest people in the Pacific Northwest!

We have way too much stuff at our house. When we joke about moving to a boat (which won’t happen but we can joke about it, anyway), we ask “Will it fit on the boat?” The piano? No. More clothes? No. More furniture? No. New experiences? YES!

My favorite gifts are experiences — presents that get me moving, seeking, learning, growing or relaxing. The memories of those experiences WILL fit on the boat.

Here is a short but fun list of experiences (with gift certificates available) in Southwest Washington (of course!) that you can give this holiday season, or year round, to friends, family or to yourself:

Pacific County
Give a gift certificate to one of my favorite places, Shakti Cove Cottages. These cute little cabins are within walking distance of the beach at Ocean Park, include kitchens and are near some of the best areas of the Long Beach Peninsula including Oysterville and Nahcotta.

Entrance to Shakti Cove Cottages

Consider including a gift certificate to Nanci and Jimella’s Klipsan Market Café just down the road. Remember the famous and fabulous Ark restaurant? That was Nancy and Jimella’s before they sold it. Their tradition of wonderful food continues in Klipsan Beach. Call 360.665.4847 for details.

Clark County
The beautifully restored Camas Hotel offers a relaxing getaway that is surrounded by shops and restaurants including Oliver’s at the hotel. Call for details and reservations.

The charming Camas Hotel

How about a gift certificate to Magenta Theater? Their 2011 plays include classics Life with Father and You Can’t Take it With You. It’s a sweet deal to have dinner in one of the many restaurants in downtown Vancouver and then stroll down to Magenta’s space on Main Street, near 6th.

Cowlitz County
Speaking of theater, do not overlook the recently restored Columbia Theatre in downtown Longview. Upcoming events include ‘S Wonderful, The Fab Four, 39 Steps (4 actors doing 150 characters!) and more including performances for children. Call for a gift certificate!

The Columbia Theatre

What about a pre-show dinner? Consider a gift certificate to JT’s Steak & Fish House, which comes highly recommended. Call 360-577-0717 for a gift certificate.

Skamania County
A night or two in the beautiful Skamania Lodge would make anyone happy. You could include a gift certificate dinner or brunch at the lodge or Big River Grill in downtown Stevenson.

The view from Skamania Lodge

Dinner at the Big River Grill

Klickitat County
Maryhill Winery offers a beautiful tasting room overlooking the Columbia River. A gift certificate to the winery can be used on their wines and items in the retail store. It’s a wonderful drive out to the winery and can easily include the remarkable Maryhill Museum.

The stunning terrace at Maryhill Winery

One more suggestion
Okay, after purchasing “experiences” for your loved ones, you may still feel the need a gift in hand to fill a stocking or to wrap for under the tree. Stop by or shop online at the Fort Vancouver Bookstore for the 2010 ornament – Fort Vancouver Village by Paul Lanquist. You’ll find lots of other gift ideas related to Southwest Washington, too.

The Fort Vancouver Village 2010 Ornament

And please HAVE A HAPPY HOLIDAY AND PEACEFUL AND PROSPEROUS NEW YEAR!

Over the past two months my 5-year-old and I had completed numerous hikes but stayed pretty close to home. Sensing we were ready for an out-of-town hike, I hustled him and my husband out the door on a recent sunny Saturday morning. Destination: June Lake.

Father and son on the June Lake trail

I had learned of June Lake a couple of days earlier when The Columbian’s Allen Thomas described it as cold, clear and wading-friendly in his July 22 column on summer hikes for families. As a native of Minnesota and lover of lake country, mention of such a lake draws me like an ant to ice cream. Turns out the big bonus on this hike is the spectacular view of Mount St. Helens that regularly pops out from behind the trees. (I enjoyed it so much that I didn’t take time to take a photo of it!)

We figured the June Lake hike might be a stretch for our son—the trail is 1.4 miles each way—so we tried not to fixate on getting to the lake. But we also packed backpacks full of loot: a cashew-raisin-chocolate chip mixture (heavy on the chocolate), energy bars, turkey jerky and water. With snack breaks every 20 minutes or so and a couple of lifts on the home stretch, our junior hiker did wonderfully. Along with his dad, he napped all the way home. Our adventure, not including driving, took us a bit over two hours.

The trail climbs nearly 700 feet, from 2,710 to 3,400 feet above sea level, a steady rise but easy hiking. The lake, which is small but pretty, provides an excellent incentive and then a great break at the end of the trail. We changed into flipflops and sandals at its little beach and cooled our feet while gazing at the waterfalls on the opposite side of the lake. Also of interest is a lava flow that backs the beach and, apparently, another trail system that continues from there. More information is available at the Gifford Pinchot National Forest Web site.

We encountered several young children on the trail who seemed to be having a grand time as well, and only one who had mounted a walking protest. She made it to the lake but not happily or quietly, and her mother reported that bugs are an issue for her. I did not notice any bugginess, but in Minnesota the mosquito is our most constant companion during the warm months, so I might not be the best judge.

The trailhead for June Lake is located a little more than an hour’s drive east of Woodland, Wash., just south of the Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument. It is an out-of-the-way location, so we were surprised to find dozens of cars already there to greet us. But once we got on the trail, we had plenty of time alone in the woods. It appears there are a few other trails heading out of that parking area.

Getting there: See the Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument map.

Good to know:
•	The trail is good but not stroller-friendly.
•	Parking is free.

Bring:
•	Snack and water
•	Flipflops or water shoes for the lake

White Christmas is not my favorite holiday song. I’m more of a Silent Night kind of gal. I like the solitude of the song. But this year, with kids arriving on December 26, we decided we would go for the white stuff while exercising our snowshoes—and hearts, lungs and thighs—on Christmas Day.

Skiing, camping, backpacking, snowshoeing, fill in your favorite expedition, why is the first trip of the season always such a struggle to get off the ground? Where are the mittens? Are these the boots that go with the snowshoes? What are we going to eat? Did you fill the gas tank? And on and on. We were determined to get out before the crowds on Christmas morning. No need to even think about it. The minutiae of the first trip slowed us down. And the crowds seeking snow like us? We would see.

By noon, we had gathered snowshoes, poles, coats, socks and more socks, mittens and hats, extra mittens and hats, Christmas lunch, maps, chains, shovel, cell phones (for an area with no service), layers of fleece and day packs with some percentage of the “10 essentials.” And, of course, the critical Sno-Park Permit. But more about that later.

Listening to classical holiday music, we headed north on I-5 to Woodland and then east on SR-503 beyond Cougar with blue sky and crisp temperature. Actually beyond crisp as high winds whipped up white caps on Lake Merwin. I watched for widow-makers in the Doug firs towering above us as small branches blew across the highway. With the exception of pure white Mount St Helens looming over us to the north, there was no evidence of snow. But we kept the faith. We WOULD find snow.

SR-503 turned into Forest Road 90 at the Skamania County line. Turning north onto Forest Road 83 at the sign to Ape Caves and Marble Mountain, still no snow. Finally, as we started to climb, we found some of the white stuff. First frost, then it accumulated, packing the road with ice in shady spots.

Winding through Gifford Pinchot Forest, we reached our destination—the Marble Mountain Sno-Park—at about 2 pm. A warming house had a fire going but we didn’t linger—we were ready to hit the Pine Marten Trail.

There is something about heavy snow on green boughs that beats a livingroom Christmas tree every time. The laden branches were gorgeous. The Christmas crowds? With the nearly empty parking lot and the diverse animal tracks in the snow, we were obviously outnumbered by furry creatures.

The trail ranged from icy, steep ups and downs to flat, soft snow. We enjoyed the teeth on the bottom of our snowshoes as they kept us upright and gave thanks that we left our skis at home. After an hour we switched to the June Lake Trail—a climb up toward base of the Mount St. Helens.

No matter how gorgeous the scenery, into every relationship must come some strife. Ours came when I asked “You DID put the Sno-Park permit on the dashboard of the car, didn’t you?” I couldn’t hear the expletives as Gary realized the permit was in his vest pocket. Darn! I was pretty sure that the fine would cost more than we spent on our Christmas gifts.

I calmed down after stopping for lunch with a Michelin five-star restaurant view — the south side of Mount St. Helens. Our peanut butter and banana sandwiches wouldn’t win rave reviews but the thermos full of hot chocolate was well worth the weight in my backpack.

Our final stop before reversing our route was June Lake. That is where we found Blair, Emily and Banjo set up for a Christmas night of snow camping. With their full view of Mount St. Helens and the waterfall into June Lake, they had the best room with a view, albeit a little chilly, in Skamania County. And a clear sky with a bright half-moon and meteor showers promised entertainment. While I don’t pretend to understand snow camping, I have to admit that I was a little jealous.

Counting the three of them, we saw seven humans and one dog all afternoon. This was a place for solitude.

By the time we turned around, the sun was setting. We walked out of the dark woods into the moonlight singing “I’m being followed by a moon shadow.” Remember the Cat Stevens song?

“Are there any elk around here?” I asked as we drove back down the road. Less than a minute later, two ran in front of the car. Further down, a deer crossed the road. And then, with a fiery trajectory, a meteor flashed over the forest. No paper and ribbons were needed for those Christmas gifts. Though we didn’t ask Santa, or anyone else for them, they were just what we needed.

(Oh yes, we were ticketed for lack of a Sno-Park Permit. The fine was $52. The kind ladies at the Skamania County District Court said that I could send in a copy of our permit and $20 and they would call it good. Our marriage is good again, too. But next time, I’ll take control of the permit…)
